Cabin Bunk Room

bunkroom1

We officially purchased a cabin on the lake in July, and we couldn’t be happier. It was always a dream of ours to have a cabin someday, and now we do - so surreal! This fixer upper is going to be packed with projects and I’m excited to share them all with you.

One of the first projects we tackled at the cabin was the bunk room, and it needed a lot of work! Here’s a before shot:

I started with ripping out the old carpet, which proved to be a HUGE challenge because it was glued down. All the old glue had to be scraped up prior to installing the luxury vinyl plank (LVP) because if we just laid the LVP on top, it would eventually move too much and break the joints.  Not what we wanted to hear, and it sucked having to do it because it didn’t come up easily, BUT it was totally worth it.

Before laying the floors, we demoed the existing closet, added sheet rock to the ceiling (almost killed myself - those sheets are so heavy!), and sanded the paneling and floors to prep for painting. Derek used Fresh Start “High-Hiding All Purpose” tinted primer to help hide some of the streaks on the ceiling drywall. After spraying he back rolled to get a more even coverage.

The color I ended up choosing for the walls is “Racoon Fur” Benjamin Moore, and I LOVE it! It’s a blue, grayish, black color, and the color varies based on location and the lighting - it’s so pretty!

I got the two bunk beds from IKEA, and you know the running joke about how IKEA furniture takes forever to build? Well, it’s true haha. It was AWFUL - the worst thing I have ever assembled in my life. My vision is starting to come together though… dark walls, bunk beds, plaid blankets, and so much more!

We ended up adding the flooring after everything was assembled. Backwards? Yes, I know, but I wanted to be able to enjoy and use the space. I had no idea how long it would take my indecisive-self to pick out the flooring we wanted to go with. Eventually we decided to choose the “Duravana Bay Bridget Oak Hybrid Resilient” flooring by LL Flooring, and I am so glad we did.

Our cabin was built in the 1930s and had an addition put on at one point so there were two different floors in the back hallway and bedroom. Now it all flows beautifully!

Final details for the bunk room that I absolutely love:

  • Wool blankets from Tartan Blanket Co.
  • The sage green cabinet between the bunk beds
  • Using my Granny’s old dresser and thrifting a mirror to go over it
  • Sconces by Van Nuys in each of the bunk nooks to make this room extra special and coze
  • Sacha Semi-flush mount light from Hunter Fan Company

I am so proud of the way this bunk room turned out and I hope you love it too! Shop this room below:
